Liz,
As I was making the Goblin Goo with my 5 year old preschoolers this morning, I looked at the newspaper article that I has gotten the ideas from and there you were!! I didn’t know you had this website. I sent all of the recipes from the Star Tribune home with my kids today. We had a blast with the goo – these kids love making a mess, as do I!!
I think we will try the gummy worm experiment on Monday. Thanks for the great ideas. I am trying to incorporate science into my curriculum on a weekly basis. This is a great beginning!

I just wanted to say THANK YOU SO MUCH for your awesome blog! As a teacher who enjoys science but is required to focus more on reading, writing and math in my curriculum, I felt like my students were missing out on all of the fun stuff. I am definitely going to incorporate your great ideas from this blog into my classroom. I appreciate your hard work more than you know! Thanks for bringing fun and great science back into my classroom! 🙂

Just a note of displeasure. I am a retired science teacher of 46 years.
I watched with GREAT DISMAY this morning while you showed your helper and you experimenting with extremely flammable ethyl alcohol, flame of which is colorless, with out protective aprons and eye-ware.
Extremely BAD EXAMPLE.

Richard, You are absolutely correct and I apologize. I intended to wear protective eyeware and have Haily wear it as well, but we taped the last minute and I forgot, which is not a good excuse. I don’t have a fireproof apron, but will stick with safer experiments from now on. I ‘ll have Kare11 amend their website to remind people to wear goggles and fireproof aprons and will update my website as well.

Dear Liz
I am a 60 year old English teacher who knows people make mistakes. I am not about to chastise you for anything, as you are my cousin & can do no wrong in my eyes, although I think when I visit and cook with you that we should ALL wear protective suits and eyewear of some sort.
I love your app & seeing my little cousins and my big cousin on the videos. I love you and plan to move in with you when I become even older and more infirm. <3 Patti

So, my son’s third grade class is learning about the sun. The project this week was a shoe box solar viewer like the one I see on your site. I was interested in knowing why tin foil is used, instead of just making the hole in the box itself. Can you educate my un-scientific mind? Thanks!

I’m not sure, but maybe because the foil is thinner than cardboard you will get a more focused image, and the thinner foil may also make it so you can change the angle of the box a little more and still see the image. Just guesses really.

pinhole in foil: yes, you can make a much smaller hole with smoother sides, so the image is a lot better than if you poke hole in cardboard. Liz,
Have you rated age appropriateness for your book? How about bright and savvy 13-year-olds? The book is a great idea, and I hope it will challenge and inform my grandkids.
I’m a little disappointed in the scientific explanations you gave for two experiments on the tube yesterday. The tablecloth pullout trick is not dependent on reduced friction but rather that the very brief time the frictional force acts on the objects is insufficient to overcome the objects’ inertia and move them off the table. Frictional force is not a function of speed, only weight and coefficient of friction. And the water in the balloon does not insulate the rubber from heat but rather removes the applied heat from the rubber by conduction so fast that the rubber does not get very hot. The action is the opposite of insulation.

Ron, Bright and savvy 13 year-olds would absolutely enjoy my book, based on my own 12 and 14 year-olds’ reactions to the experiments we’ve done at home, including water bottle rockets, solar ovens and growing microbes on homemade petri dishes!

Thank you for the corrections, and you are absolutely right. I shouldn’t have used the term insulation and I do know that the objects’ inertia overcomes the friction, but shouldn’t have mentioned speed. As a biologist, I should always triple-check my physics explanations before going on live TV. (There are no such errors in my book!) I won’t make the same mistake again, and will be sure to say that the applied heat from the flame removes heat from the rubber by conduction next time I do this demonstration!

Follow the directions in this post, but paint the glue on pine cones, sprinkle some alum crystals on the glue before it dries, and soak the pine cones in supersaturated alum solution. The directions are in this post. https://kitchenpantryscientist.com/frozen-crystallize-your-holidays/ You may have to put something in the jar to weigh the pine cones down and keep them submerged. I so appreciate having science for kids offered in a fun way! At the same time, I do want the basic information conveyed to be correct, cause when someone learns something wrong, it’s hard to undo. While the vaccine segment on WCCO morning show was great for traditional vaccines, I’m not sure it should not have been used to explain the Corona vaccine. Maybe just more of a disclaimer could be included for those listening. She said the vaccine puts a viral spike in. Oh well. It’s hard to simplify without losing some reality.

I believe I said that the vaccine introduces the spike to the immune system. I didn’t have time to explain that it can be introduced via RNA or protein. With only two minutes, I go into as much detail as I can.

Hello! I’ve been using your books for the last couple summers with my nephew and we love the experiments! Today we did lab 14, the organic oil extraction, from the chemistry book. We followed the instructions in the book — juiced 10 large navel oranges, cut the peels into pieces, warmed in water (warmed faster than we thought and it got to about 120F), drained and then pressed all the peels with a garlic press (took ages!). At the end we had no oil after all that work! I even tried to press the peel bits through a sieve and no luck. Any idea what we did wrong or if we can save this? We wanted to use the oil for the lab #2 soap experiment. Thank you!!
