Learn physics, chemistry, and biology in your own backyard! In Outdoor Science Lab for Kids, scientist and mom Liz Heinecke has created 52 family-friendly labs designed to get you and yours outside in every season.

From playground physics to backyard bugs, this book makes it fun and easy to dig into the natural sciences and learn more about the world around you. Have fun learning about:
  • the laws of physics by constructing and using a marshmallow catapult.
  • centripetal forces by swinging a sock filled with gelatin snack and marbles.
  • earthworms by using ground mustard seed dissolved in water to make them wriggle to the surface.
  • germination by sprouting a sapling from a pinecone or tree seed.
  • surface tension and capillary action by growing baking soda stalagmites and stalactites.
Many of the simple and inexpensive experiments are safe enough for toddlers, yet exciting enough for older kids, so families can discover the joy of science and STEM education together.

Outdoor Science Lab for Kids was a 2017 Finalist for the AAAS/Subaru Prize for excellence in science books.

The popular
Lab for Kids series features a growing list of books that share hands-on activities and projects on a wide host of topics, including art, astronomy, clay, geology, math, and even how to create your own circus—all authored by established experts in their fields. Each lab contains a complete materials list, clear step-by-step photographs of the process, as well as finished samples. The labs can be used as singular projects or as part of a yearlong curriculum of experiential learning. The activities are open-ended, designed to be explored over and over, often with different results. Geared toward being taught or guided by adults, they are enriching for a range of ages and skill levels. Gain firsthand knowledge on your favorite topic with Lab for Kids.

About the Author

Liz Lee Heinecke has loved science since she was old enough to inspect her first butterfly. After working in molecular biology research for 10 years and earning her master’s degree, she left the lab to kick off a new chapter in her life as a stay-at-home mom. Soon, she found herself sharing her love of science with her three kids as they grew, chronicling their science adventures on her KitchenPantryScientist website. Her desire to share her enthusiasm for science led to regular television appearances, an opportunity to serve as an Earth Ambassador for NASA, and the creation of an iPhone app. Her goal is to make it simple for parents to do science with kids of all ages, and for kids to experiment safely on their own. Liz graduated from Luther College and received her master’s degree in bacteriology from the University of Wisconsin, Madison. She is the author of Kitchen Science Lab for KidsKitchen Science Lab for Kids: Edible EditionOutdoor Science Lab for Kids, and STEAM Lab for Kids.

The kids were 8 and 6 when we got this book. They're a year older now and they still like it!! We got it for fun but we also use it to supplement homeschooling science curriculum. It is a very interactive outdoor resource. Broken up into 12 units with 4 or 5 activities in each unit. Cheap and sometimes free nothing in here is difficult to set up really except maybe ones needing a kid pool and hose depending on what type of city you're living in.

This was a hit with my 7 year old great granddaughter! While this book is meant for older children, she is a quick learner and performs above her age level. She loves exploring nature in the out of doors and all things science. Her immediate response was to learn an experiment and show me how it was done and what it proved. Even though the book is intended for older children, there is enough variety to keep a wide range of children interested.

Great book for those outdoorsy kids in your life or those who need a boost to get them interested in the outdoors. This book will give them wonderful ideas for adventures and provide an opportunity to learn along the way. Liz does such a great job in providing all the information you need for fun science projects that will turn into great family events and they have each been tested with her own family. This is also a great book to donate to your child’s school library!

a gift for grandson. Good opportunity for outdoor fun while learning. Good father/son activity and mom too!

We are loving this book! Easy to understand the experiments as it is all layed out so nicely on every page. My daughter went through the book and took sticky notes to mark what experiments she wanted to do.... She is 10 years old. Her little sister who is 5 helped make the lip balm which was really fun. A few tips.... We found lip balm plastic holders at the hobby lobby store, we used pure beeswax soap from whole foods and chopped it up, and we used flavored drinks to create the scent. Super fun and super sciency!!! 5 stars for this book!

Lots of fun ideas but some were a little obvious, better for younger kids, and some required materials I just don’t have. The book did inspire us to create our own experiments though!
